Feral Horses of Letea Forest

Did you knew that Romania houses over 2000 feral horses?

These horses can be found in Letea Forest, a wooden realm with hundred of years of history, Letea can mean “A Place to Rest”, while others believe it comes from other ancient slavic words like the russian “Letja” which means “summer pasture area”.

Nonetheless, it is indeed a whimsical place with trees older than we think, moving sand dunes and of course, feral horses. There are many theories about their origin story. Some may consider them descendants of ancient Tarpan horse (east european wild horse), while others just infirms this by claiming they’re just abandoned horses, which in time became feral.

The truth can actually be somewhere in the middle. While not yet confirmed the number of chromosomes these horses holds, they CAN be a mixture of wild horses and abandoned domestic ones. Even so, they remain one of the main attractions of the area, and also a popular ecocentrism topic.
